Steelcox, c’est quoi Rockabilly ?
La première chanson de l’album « Vintage » s’intitule « Années 80 ». Les paroles de cette chanson se terminent par le mot Rockabilly, mais Rockabilly c’est quoi au juste ?

Le Rockabilly, qui peut s’écrire aussi Rock-A-Billy, c’est un peu les fondations du rock n’ Roll. Le Rockabilly est apparu au début des années 50. Le terme Rockabilly est une contraction de Rock et Hillbilly. C’est un style musical bien précis. Cette forme d’expression musicale est typiquement américaine puisque il s’agit d’une sorte de Rock n’ Roll blanc essentiellement sudiste, influencée par le Country and Western appelé Hillbilly d’une part, et d’autre part, par le Blues noir et le Rock n’ Roll nordiste. Mais c’est pas aussi compliqué que ça en a l’air ! o:)

Le Hillbilly désigne plus précisément la musique Folk devenue ensuite la Country Music. Son origine se situe dans la région montagneuse des Appalaches. Comme son nom l’indique, c’est la musique qui était jouée dans les campagnes américaines. On trouve des titres comme « Hillbilly Boogie » et « Freight Train Boogie » des Delmore Brothers en 1946,  « Blue Moon of Kentucki » de Bill Monroe, les titres « Move it Over », « Lovesick Blues », « Hey Good Looking » et « Jambalaya » de Hank Williams, etc. …

Le Rock lui provient d’une forme de Blues, de Rythm n’ Blues née dans la fin des années 40. Les titres qui illustrent bien ce genre de musique sont « Let the Good Times Roll » de Louis Jordan en 1946, « Good Rocking Tonight » de Roy Brown en 1948, « Rock and Roll Blues » d’Erline Harris en 1949, « Rock the Joint » de Jimmy Preston en 1949 également, « Rocket 88 » de Jacky Brenston en 1951. Ensuite viendront « Hound Dog » de Big Mama Thornton en 1953, « Shake Rattle and Roll » de Big Joe Turner en 1954. Ca ne nous rajeunit pas tout ça !

En fait, ce sont les rencontres fréquentes entre musiciens noirs et musiciens blancs qui donneront naissance au Rock n’ Roll comme on le connaît aujourd’hui. C’est surtout Elvis Presley avec le guitariste Scotty Moore qui marquera la reconnaissance mondiale du Rock n’Roll dès juillet 1954 avec sa reprise et son excellente interprétation du célèbre « That’s All Right Mama » d’Arthur Big Boy Crudup cette même année. Dans un contexte de forte ségrégation raciale, Elvis Presley symbolise le mieux cette mixité, ayant été révélé au public par Sam Philipps de la Sun Records, comme un chanteur blanc qui chante comme un noir ! Plus tard le Rock n’ Roll se modifiera pour donner naissance à la Pop et au Rock.

Je pense que même si les parents d’Elvis lui avait acheté la bicyclette dont il rêvait pour Noël au lieu de cette guitare offerte par manque de moyens, Elvis aurait tout de même rejoint la musique un jour où l’autre pour permettre à son immense talent de voir le jour. Il n’aurait pas pu nous priver de tout ça et, entre nous, je ne l’aurais pas vu coureur cycliste et vous non plus j’imagine ! 😮

Les caractéristiques d’un groupe de Rockabilly sont assez simples. Le groupe est composé généralement d’un chanteur, d’une guitare électrique, d’une batterie réduite à quelques éléments tels que la grosse caisse, la caisse claire et une cymbale et parfois même à la seule caisse claire. Il y a aussi  une contrebasse qui est jouée en slap bass et quelques fois en pizzicati. La guitare électrique remplace le violon et la pedal steel guitar attachés à la Country Music.

Les paroles des chansons reprennent les thèmes principaux de la culture populaire américaine comme les histoires sentimentales et sociales avec quelques clins d’œil à l’automobile. Il se dégage du Rockabilly, comme du Rock n’ Roll, cette folie sympathique qui gagne les teenagers. Rien de mieux que de partager cette musique entre copains le samedi soir devant la scène ou sur une piste de dance. Cet enthousiasme contagieux et cette insouciance de jeunesse méritent bien de conserver leurs places à jamais dans nos cœurs. Les vêtements adoptés pour marquer son appartenance à ce style de musique sont le fameux blouson de cuir noir, le costume des amateurs de jazz et de bebop des années 40 avec chemise à col ouvert, les boots pointues et aussi les jeans serrés. La coiffure des garçons c’est la fameuse « banane » qui a marqué cette époque. Les filles elles, elles portent des pantalons corsaires, des robes chiffon ou des chemisettes.

La forte popularité de ce style de musique a été malheureusement de courte durée. Elle décline dans les années 60 pour réapparaître au cours des années 70 et 80. Les adeptes se réclament de cette sous-culture qu’ils n’hésitent pas à mélanger à bien d’autres styles.

La naissance du Rockabilly coïncide avec celle du single vinyl qui a fait les plus belles années des splendides juke boxes. Le label qui a produit le plus d’artistes de Rockabilly est sans conteste l’excellente Sun Records de Monsieur Sam Philipps à Memphis Tennessee. Les premiers disques de Rockabilly sont ceux des artistes comme Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Roy Orbison, Warren Smith et Billy Lee Riley. D’autres labels comme Météor et King ont aussi enregistré des artistes de Rockabilly.

La chanson de Steelcox fait donc allusion, entre autres, au groupe des Stray Cats qui ont redonné un nouveau souffle au Rockabilly, revenu au goût du jour, dans les années 80.
